Replying to a request by Mr. Witty, M.P., that the Railway Department should supply consignors of goocls with duplicate copies of weight certificates free of charge, the Minister for Railways concludes a lengthy letter: “After giving the matter every consideration, 1 regret that I cannot see my way to supnW duplicate certificates free of charge, but the Department will, as hitherto, supply them on payment of the regulation fee.” IMPROVEMENT OF COLONIAL PHYSIQUE. A MOTOR-CAR SERVICE. A meeting was held at Pleasant Point to endeavor to arrange a motor car service from Tiinaru, for mails and newspapers, three mornings a week, as no train runs out from Timaru. If it can be arranged the service may be extended to Fairlie. An alternative idea was put forward that the Department should try a petrol motor car on the line. PROPOSED INDEPENDENT METHODIST CONFERENCE. DUNEDIN, July 12. The Methodist Conference appointed a committee to draw up a . working scheme re an independent conference, for submission to the .June quarterly circuit meetings. Un to the present 25 congregations have considered the question. The number of office-bearers present at the deliberations wore 457, and of this number 312 voted in favof of separation and 126 it, while If) took up a neutral attitude. STRICTURES ON A LEGAL FIRM WITHDRAWN. Sitting at Waikouaiti, Mr. Hutchison, S.M., unreservedly withdrew strictures lie had made there concerning Moore and Moore, solicitors. He said that Judge Williams’ observations were based on fuller material, his judgment having, as it now appeared, proceeded on incomplete and imperfect knowledge of the facts. At the Police Court this morning seven persons were charged that having paid fares on the railway from Dunedin to Burnside they did not quit the carriage on arrival at their destination, but went to Abbotsford, a mile further on. The Department having reason to suspect the practice was being carried on, a special check was made, with the result that several people were found to he over-riding their destination.
