ATHLETICS.
A GREAT MARATHON. Henry St. Yves, the French distance runner, who a month ago surprised us all by defeating such, runners as Dorando, tShrubb, Hayes, and Longboat in the first great professional outdoor “Marathon Derby” held in New York, again manifested his superiority over the Marathon route by outrunning twelve competitors in an International Marathon at the Polo Grounds, New York, on May S. It was a gruelling run, and runner after runner collapsed. The. sto'cky Frenchman did not falter, however. Ho cam© home - a winner from John Svitmberg, of Sweden, by five laps, or fivesixths of a mile. He covered the Marathon distance in 2h 44min. ssec. Ted Crook, an American, was third, and the mighty Dorando had to content himself 'with sixth place at the finish. Edouard Cibot, a French six-day runner, was seventh, and the rest nowhere. John D. Marsh, a Canadian, ran second to St. Yves for fifteen miles, but the Frenchman killed him off in the sixteenth. Marsh kept going in a labored way until the 25th mile, and then gave up. The Marathon was witnessed by 20,■T’jQ persons. A puree of 10,000 -dol. was divided among the first seven that finished, and of this St. Yves received COOOdol. ST. YVES BEATEN BY SHRUBB. It certainly seems as though St. Yves has the Marathon game down pat, while at shorter distances he is apt to find his match. Alf Shrubb, for one, took him into camp in a fifteen miles race at the American Lcaguo Baseball Park, New York, on April 24. St. Yves was nearly a third of a mile behind while Shrubb was crossing the tape. It was in sprinting that Shrubb /lid for the Frenchman. St. Yves tried to hold Shrubb even in the. first mile, but was beaten by 75yds, and after that the Frenchman seemed to lose heart. Here is Shrubb’s time by miles: 4.54, 10.14, 15.32, 20.56, 26.25. 31.56, 37.29, 43.19, 49.23, 55.39, 1.1.12 (time for miles 12, 13 and 14 not given); finish, 1.26.12. On May 8 Shrubb defeated Tom Longboat at Toronto, Can., in a fifteen miles race. The race .was run on the grounds of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, and Shrubb won by nearly a third of a mile in lh 23min 575. The Englishman got away in the lead, arid kept on gaining until the twelfth mile, when he lapped his opponent. The track was three laps to the mile. Longboat’s time for the distance was lh 25min 46sec. A great crowd saw the race, and broke on the track to cheer the winner. Shrubb iran the last three miles with a raw blister the sizo of a half-dollar on his right heel. DORANDO AGAIN. Dorando had tilings' liis own way in a special fifteen miles with Mat Maloney at Yonkers on May 4. The runners were both in good condition, and for five miles ran an even race. In the sixth mile Dorando opened a gap, anJi after that was not bothered. The first five miles were covered in 28min o2sec, arid Dorando finished tho fifteen miles, jogging, in lb 28min 33sec.
