OBITUARY.
United Press Association — CorYrtic.nT LONDON, July 12. Professor Simon Newcomb, president of the Astronomical Society of America, is dead. [Professor Simon Newcomb was born on tho 12th March, 1835, his (father being Professor J. ’B. Newcomb. In 1861 lie was appointed Professor of Mathematics in the United States Navy which position he held for many years. In 1894 Professor Newcomb was a professor of John Hopkins University. In 1902 he received Honorary Doctorates from Cambridge. Oxford, Dublin, and Edinburgh, also L.L.D. from John Hopkins University. He was a foreign member of the Institute of France and of many American and Foreign Societies. besides being a foreign member of the' Rova 1 Society, Royal Astronomical 1 Society', and Royal Institution. He was appointed President of the Astronomical and Astroplivsical Society of America. and of the Congress of Arts and Science, St. Louis, in 4904. The Professor has made many astronomical discoveries and wrote .several publications. Among bis works are those on Popular Astronomy. Tables of the Motives of the Eight Major Planets, the Constants of Astronomy, several ‘works on theYlotion of the Moon and other Heavenly Bodies, a Plain Man’s Talk on the Libor Question, Principles of Political Economy, Elements of Astronomy, His Wisdom the Defender, the Stars- — a St ml v of the Universe, Astronomy for Everybody. and a Compendium of Spherical Astronomy.’]
