OBITUARY.
MR GEORGE HARRIS
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 15. George Harris, formerly of the Customs Department, and at one time well known in cricketing circles, is dead. Ho was during the war Troop Ser-geant-Major of the Hawke’s Bay cavalry, and was present at the storming of Omnranui pa. [When a Custom-house first opened in Gisborne, about 1575, Mr. Harris -was appointed the first eoliectoi of Customs. He occupied the position for a considerable time. While- in Gisborne he became a- member of the 'Masonic fraternity, and was one of the early members of the Turangamu ‘Lodge. He retired from the Customs service upwards of twenty years ago, on account of ill-health. Mr. Harris was well-known as a- gentleman rider 'in the Hawke’s Bay. district, and lie and his horse, Blazoaway, will be remembered by all who recollect the steeplechase meetings which took place in tho old days.]
