BOWLING.
GISBORNE CLUB. The green of the Gisborne Bowling Club witnessed, a large gathering of players yesterday afternoon, when five fuli-rin'k games were played. The green was in very good order, considering its ' recent soaking, and the players present ■had a very enjoyable time. Interest cliieflv centred in the match between E. A. Martin’s and T. Corson s rinks, in the competition for the Martin medals. Victory rested with the former, and, though they played admirably it must be admitted that the defeat'of Corson, who, by the bye, had the assistance of a handicap of three points, was largely due to a piece of ill-luclc which befel him. . The following were the players and scores: — ■ , . * " Boulton, 0. Hansen, E. Lewis, 1?. A. Martin (skip) (scr) 19 beat Wilson, 1 • Adair. W. It. Clarkson, 1. Corson (skip) (3) 18. Martin ran np a score of eight points on the first four heads before Corson scored. The latter got in a single on the fifth head, and Martin returned the compliment on the sixth. Corson scored on the three following heads, getting in a two and a. couple of singles. On the tenth head there was no score, the opposing howls being absolutely even. On that following . On the twenty-first head occurred -Corson’s stroke of bad luck, tie drew-- the shot with his first bowl. Martin, with hi 9, failed to alter the, position, and Corson endeavored to put in a block with liis second. Instead of doing so* ho shifted his own shot, and left Martin lying one, and the head ended with the score at 18 all. The. deciding head produced an exciting struggle. When the Nos. 3 had delivered their bowls, Corson was lying two. Martin, who played an admirable game throughout, drew the shot. Corson then canned the jack nearly to the edge C>f the green, and left his side lying. Martin again drew the shot. Corson’s last ball failed to effect an alteration, and Martin’s team were the victors by the narrowest possible margin of a splendidly contested game. They have won the competition, and will, become the possessors of handsome gold medals presented to the club by Mr J. H. Martin. After the conclusion of the match, the members and visitors who had watched its close with keen interest, gave hearty cheers for the two teams.
