HOCKEY.
. SHIELD MATCHES. The hockey competition was continued at the Victoria Domain yesterday afternoon in perfect weather. The ground was in a rough condition, but two good games resulted. WEST END (0) v. CITY (0). This was a fairly even game, neither side being able to claim much advantage over the other. Each team attacked in turn, but was unable, to penetrate their opponents' defence, and tho game ended in a scoreless draw. For West End, Roderick, Davy, Sim, and McLachlan played well; while Mar-' tin, Doyle, Armstrong, Corbett, and Day /were about the best of the. City players. Mr. P. W. Bushnell controlled the ■game. Y.M.C.A. (2) v. CIVIL SERVICE (1). This was a fast and interesting game from start to finish, and some good play was shown. Civil Service had numerous opportunities of scoring, but were weak in the circle. Ellison scored both goals for Y.M.C.A.,' and Rudman scored for Civil Service. A 'member of the latter team was ordered off the ground for appealing to the referee for a case of obstruction against ’one of the other Civil Servants. The referee at first threatened the player and told him not to appeal, hut the player, who happened to he the captain of the. team, insisted on his right, as captain, to appeal. - For Y.M.C.A., Pine, Rewai, and Ellison played well; while for Civil Service, Stagpoole, Scott, and Hargreaves worked hard. t* A nr fCitvf ivn-s the referee.
