FOUNDLING HOSPITALS.
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND; ‘July 15. , At last night’s meeting ,of the Auckland branch of the Liberal and Labor 'Moderation, a. resolution, moved by Mr. Gresham, city coroner, was carried—- “ That in view of the abandonment and putting away of newly-born infants, which at present prevails in the Dominion, the Goverment be urged to establish foundling hospitals, such institutions tending to discourage infanticide.” COUNTY .VALUATIONS. The Manukau Local Bodies’ Conference passed a resolution expressing the opinion that the present system of valuing county lands for taxation is defective, and lends itself to injustice, since improvements are. not properly exempted, and unimproved value unfairly increased. Rental on producing value was a much fairer system than selling value. ENCOURAGING RIFLE SHOOTING. Authority to use the roofof the reservoir adjoining the Newton West school for "the purpose of a rifle range for the pupils attending that school was granted by the City Council tonight. FROST AT NAPIER. "NAPIER, July 15. There was a very severe frost last night throughout the district. It will act as a wholcsime check to premature sprang growth. WORKMEN’S DWELLINGS. A deputation of trade unionists waited on the Mayor (Air; J. Vigor Brown, M.P.) this evening, and asked him to forward to the Minister of Labor a resolution urging the speedy erection of workmen’s dwellings in Napier. Mr. Vigor Brown expressed agreement with the resolution, and promised to do all he could in the matter-. THE LATE AIR. JAMES. DANNEVIRKE, July 15 At the Court yesterday, -la.- members of the Bar, supported, by police officers, passed a resolution of iegret at the death of Mr. James, B.M . and expressing warm appreciation of his services, and condolence with his wife and family in their loss. OPIUM DEN KEEPER FINED. TAIHAPE, July 15. In the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Ah Hung was fined £2O and costs for keeping an opium den. A considerable quantity of the drug was found in a dog kennel, and was seized by the ] olice. BREACHES OF INDUSTRIAL AWARDS. CHRISTCHURCH, July 15. ■Several enforcement eases ■were lean! in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. ‘Hugh Roberts, builder, F. Bio SSj bu*lder, and George Simpson, builder, for failing to give preference, were fined '2os, £3. and £4, respectively. James Maxwell, for employing a driver under 18 years, was fined £4. J. Schumaker, for employing a carter in a ‘bakehouse, was fined £2, and Shannon and Sons, for employing too many apprentices, were fined £2. UNIVERSAL MILITARY SERVICE. A public meeting of citizens, called by the Mayor, was held last night, when a' motion in favor of universal compulsory service was adopted. FIRE AT NEW BRIGHTON. Last evening a 15-roomcd house in the pleasure grounds at New Engl ton, known as Bligh’s Garden, was burned. The building was o-wned by T. Stevens, who was in the city at the time, 'the only occupants of the. house being Mrs. Stevens and three children. The building was soon completely destroyed.The “Wonderland” portion of the gardens was untouched. SLY GROG SELLING. DUNEDIN, July 15. At Balclutha yesterday, Mr. Iveurick, S.M., fined A. W. Gcddes £3 and 7s costs for selling liquor at Owaka, m a no-license district. A constable asked defendant for a hop beer or something warm, and was .supplied with whisky. In consideration of a plea of guilty*, two other .charges were withdrawn.
