Lissaniann was charged with selling liquor containing 30.03 per cent proof of spirit known as Molewa • port wine. A constable purchased a bottle for 4s. The contents were analysed by the public analyst, and upon his report the charge was laid. The wine was be ton times stronger than ordinary ale. and half the maximum strength of brandy. Defendant had sold twelve cases in a very short time-. The Magistrate found defendant guilty of a breach of section 273 of the Act, but in view of the circumstances of the case, and defendant’s bona fidos. and the anomaly in law in respect to the sale of medicinal wine in Maori districts, he dismissed the charge on defendant paying £S 2s 6d costs. It was suggested that the anomaly in section 273 as affecting Maori districts be brought under the notice of the Attor-ney-General.
