THE POSITION AT MIRAMAR, (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July. 17. Negotiations between the City Council and Gas Company for the sale to the company for a term of years of the right to bring the gas mains from Miramar through . the city streets have reached a stage where the Council demands payment- of £SUO per annum for the privilege and the company. offers £250. Matters are now complicated through an attempt by the company to secure the issue of an order-in-coun-cil authorsing the work under the private Bill of 1908, which was believed to safeguard the Council's'"rights in such a case as this. One proviso was inserted by arrangement between Sir Joseph Ward and Mr. Hislop, late Mayor, and it- was understood no order would ever be issued while any negotiations were incomplete, but the Acting-Premier (Mr. Carroll) lias said he will, not dojay -the. issue later than Monday unless stronger reasons arc submitted than any given so, far. . The Town Clerk lias forwarded a long and strongly written letter, stating the. Council’s position and views, ami -Monday’s issue is being eagerly awaited, as the proposal at issue involves an important and farreaching principle.
