FOOTBALL.

TOWN COMPETITION. CHAMPIONSHIP COMPETITION. The Saturday championship games were continued on Saturday afternoon in fine weather. The ground was slippery, preventing good play, but there ■was a fairly large attendance of spectators. SENIOR COMPETITION. RAITI-CITY (3) v. UNITED (0). City won the toss and attacked the eastern goal. Play centred' in City twenty-five, and from an unsuccessful penalty City were compelled, to force. Loose play followed and in City twentyfive A._ Luttrell made a good opening, hut a forward pass by Witty lost a certain score. United continued to press, and passing well were nearly over. A free kick brought relief, but the United backs again got going, a- bad pass by Grenfell again losing a likely chance. City were forced again, and from the kick out mad© their way for the first time to United twenty-five, where a penalty brought temporary ■ relief. Scrum work of an -uninteresting nature followed and, aided by a penalty, United brought play back to City’s territory, Witty and C. Somervell being prominent with good work. City forwards rushed the ball back again to ’ nited twenty-five, where a series *f I’ue-oofcs took place, Tocker was nearly over, but a. penalty saved United. Play was transferred to mid-field, where further scrums took place, but firm a penalty City were put on the attack by a nice line- kick from" Puflett. After heavy work on‘the United line, the defenders were compeUed to force, but from the kick out Puflett again found the line near the corner flag. City kept up the attack hotly, but were un r able to add the finishing touches to their efforts. Ferguson and Pa aka Turei headed a rush of the United forwards to half way, where Fromm saved well. A passing run by Flatman, Tocker and Stagpoole brought play back into the United half, -when the whistle sounded for the interval. On. the resumption, even play resulted in mid-field, the game being chiefly confined to the forwards. City carried the ball to the United twentyfive, where Puflett had another unsuccessful attempt at goal from a penalty. The ball was forced and after an interchange of kicks, play settled in United’s territory. In the twenty-five Flatman obtained and gave to Tocker who gave Fromm a good pass, enabling the latter to score. Puflett failed at goal. From the kick out, City returned to the . attack and Witty saved with a good kick to centre. Give and take play followed, City, if anything, having the best of the game. From a spectator’s point of view the. game was anything but interesting, the ball seldom coming out to the backs. _ A loose rush of the City forwards carried the ball to the United line, where City were awarded a penalty for obstruction. Tocker failed at goal. City continued to press hard and Nicolas, Shepherd and Grinlinton were nearly over. Puflett had two further unsuccessful attempts at goal, and Witty and Somervell transferred play to centre. City came again and Luttrell saved after a couple of scrums on the line. „ Even fast play resulted until just on time, when United took a turn in attacking, and were pressing hotly when, the whistle sounded for time, leaving scores, Kaiti-City 3, United 0. ~ , Mr L F. Williams controlled the game. ' JUNIORS. UNITED (6) v. Y.M.C.A. (4). Y.M.C.A. kicked off and pressed immediately, causing United to force. From the kick-off play took place in Y.M.C.A. territory, but was relieved by Coleman with a good line kick near the corner. United, again had to force from the tbrtnv in. United forwards then got going and rushed the ball to Y.M.C.A. twenty-five, where Breiugan intercepted a pass and sent the ball to centre. United returned the leather, kicking out at Y.M.C.A.’s corner. From the throw in Olsen secured and made a good hut unsuccessful attempt | at goal, and Y.M.C.A. forced. Y.M.C.A then pressed hard and United forced : twice. From the centre Burnside, half j for Y.M.C.A., made a good di-billing run to United twenty-five, where Barker picked up 6martly and, a*ter a good run, was pushed out on the corner. Y.M.C.A. forwards forced the ball over from the throw in, but did not score. United pressed hard in the closing stages of the first spell and just on time were awarded a free kick near Y.M.C.A.’s line. Atkinson made a poor j kick at goal and the spell ended with no scores. . _ With ends changed United were stronger and sent the ball to Y.M.C.A. twenty-five, where a good kick by Arthur returned and went out well up the line. From the. throw in Burnside secured and passed to Graham, Breignan and Barker, the latter kicking a brilliant goal. With the game against them United made a great effort and kept play in Y.M.C.A. twenty-five, where Jacobs scored. Oken took the kick without success. United still kept up the attack and' soon after were 'awarded another try, Nicolls scoring from a forward rush. Olsen, again took the kick without , success. Y.M.C.A. then made an attempt to oyercome the United forwards, but play ended without further scores being registered. Mr W. Howard refereed.

THIRDS. DEFENCE CADETS (21) v. HIGH • SCHOOL (3). Defence Cadets again were the victors in the third grade match, scoring 21 points to 3. For the victors J. Lloyd, ■ Takapapa, Dennett (2) and Skeet scored, three tries being converted. For the losers Garthorn scored. Mr J. Martin refereed. SCHOOL MATCH. A football match was played on Saturday morning at the Victoria Domain between the combined Mangapapa and Catholic schools and the High School’s second fifteen. The latter team won. by 23 to 3. The following scored tries for the High School: —D. Muir, McIldowie (2), 'Fail-lie, Grant, Quigley, and Clare, the latter converting his own try. Dennett scored for the losers. Mr. E. Luttrell was referee. OUTSIDE MATCHES. AUCKLAND MATCHES. [Plill I’llH*, .ASSOCIATION AUCKLAND, July 17. The Auckland Rugby Union’s distract championship matches were played toiy in depressing weather conditions. The grounds were sodden, as the result of heavy rain yesterday. A light drizzle fell throughout to-day’s matches. In the senior grade, Ponsonby defeated City (for the second time this season) by 24 points to 5. The score was no indication of the game, which jwas evenly and willingly contested. Ponsonby has now practically won tho senior grade. The other senior matches resulted as follows: Parnell beat Newton by 14 points to nil, University beat Grafton by. 8 points to 3. WELLINGTON MATCHES POSTPONED. WELLINGTON, July 18. All outdoor games were postponed on Saturday owing to the ram. CHRISTCHURCH MATCHES. CHRISTCHURCH, July 17. The results of the senior football matches to-day were: Christchurch (8) v. Old. Boys (B)—a draw; Merivale (5) beat Linwood (4); Albion (10) be..b Canterbury College (3). DUNEDIN MATCHES. DUNEDIN, July 17. The following were the results of the Ru-ohy football matches to-day: Alham-,,-a°(8) beat Dunedin (nil); Pirates (20) beat University (6); Union v. Kaikorai, a draw, no score; Taieri Rovers (11) beat Port Chalmers (8); Southern v. Zingari-Richmond, a draw, 3 points each.
