RAKAUROA xnOTES. (From our own Correspondent.) The other day I visited Mr. W. L. Roes’ sawmill at Rakauroa, and shown over by the manager, Mr. Cbas. Drummond, who is well associated with experienced sawmillers, being a partner in the well-known firm of Drummond .Bros. After having made an inspection of the busli, which contains much valuable timber, we proceeded along a newly constructed tramway, a quarter of a'mile distant from the hush to the mill. On turning a corner on this line we come upon a Farquahar double mill, which has the latest methods of breaking down timber. The plant is just about completed, and cutting operations are to commence shortly. Upwards of 3000 sheep have passed through Rakauroa district lately, en route for Opotiki. The frost which we had last Tuesday night is considered to be the most severe experienced fo some time in this part of the district. In some places the ice was from two to four inches thick. Great interest is being aroused among the “dancing community” at the fancy dross ball which is to take place, on Friday, July 30tli.
