OBITUARY.
DON CARLOS—THE SPANISH , PRETENDER. United Press Assuciat jn—Copyright. (Received July 19, 11 p.m.) | ROME, July 19. Don Carlos has died of apoplexy, at Veres, Italy. [Don Carlos, Duke of Madrid, was born at Laibach in 1848. Ho was a grand-nephew of Ferdinand VII., and claimed the Crown of Spain on the ground that Isabella, daughter of Ferdinand VII. and Christina, and mother of Alfonso XII., owing to th© Salic law, was debarred from the succession. Like his grandfather and uncle, who as Charles V. and Charles VI. fought for their rights (tho former during 7 and the latter during 3 years), Don Carlos took np arms in 1872, and reigned as Charles VII. over the greater part of northern Spain until 1876, when, being surrounded by tho forces of Alfonso XII., who had recently been proclaimed King at Madrid, he retired into Franco. As tho undisputed senior heir male of the House of Bourbon, Don Carlos had a distinct right to the throne of France in the event of a monarchical restoration, but though frequently invited by tho royalists of that country to put forward his claim, he always abstained from doing so.]
