DEPUTATION TO ACTING-PREMIER [Peb Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 19. A deputation representing the TYclliimton City Council waited on the Hon. J. °Carroll this morning to protest against the proposal to issue an orcler-in-council giving the Gas Company the rio-ht to take; its main through the citv boundaries to Miramar. Messrs. Hislop and Aitkcn, ex-Mayors, were present. , , A strong protest was made and some very plain speaking indulged in. Tho deputation declared that if the order was issued the local government might as well cud and tho Government would be simply placing itself in the position of taking sides with the company against the rights of citizens. Eventually, Mr Carroll promised the deputation to stay his hand for a “reasonable time if an attempt is made to settle the matter bv arbitration.
