THE UNEMPLOYED.
THE POSITION IN GISBORNE. “Though there are cases of distress talked about through unemployment,” said Mr. D. Carmody, Inspector of Labor, to a “Times” reporter yesterday, “I meet with none of them, and I would like to know where they are. There are some unemployed about, but no distress, and I think the position as regards want, of employment is getting a little easier in Gisborne.” . AFFAIRS AT i>APIER, NAPIER, July 20. There are still a good many men here who are unable to find work. Very few subscriptions are being received by the Citizens’ Relief Committee, partly because there is a feeling against attracting men here when there is no work t-o offer them. THE POSITION IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, July 20. A satisfactory feature in connection with the unemployment difficulty is that a number uf men have asked for the removal of their names from the Citizens’ Relief Committee’s list, stating that they have found work at their own trades. One marked effect of the relief works is the rapid falling off in the number of applicants at the Labor Department’s bureau in Wellington. One hundred and seventeen men are employed at bushfelling at Waitotara, and are reported to be doing well. Though the Public Works Department has been sending batches of unemployed to the railway works at Stratford, and Gisborne and Midland railways, the total number of its employees has not increased materially, as many men are leaving as are beinp; put on. which is taken as an indication that the labor market is improving. UNEMPLOYMENT IN DUNEDIN.
DUNEDIN, July 20. Within the last fortnight the City Council has taken on 117 previously unemployed men. The Drainage Board to-night gave its engineer authority to carry out at once by day labor certain reticulation, which requires the services of at least 35 men.
