In tlie House of Representatives Mr Batchelor, as a matter of urgency, called attention to the effect on the wine trade of the South African and New Zealand tariffs. Ho urged that. steps should be taken, to place the Commonwealth on. an equal footing with South Africa as regards imports into New Zealand. Mr Dealcin said that but for Mr Seddon’s untimely death lie had no doubt whatever but that the reciprocity treaty would have been ratified by New Zealand and the Goyernmcnt, Whenever a single matter was brought up the New Zealand authorities stated that the time was not ripe for such a change. The Federal Government would make every effort to re-open the question.
