During a discussion in the House of Commons on the Foreign Office vote, Mr. Arthur Henderson (Labor member for Durham) protested against the Czar’s visit. , . . '[ Sir Charles Dilke criticised Sir Edward Grey’s policy regarding Bosnia and Herzegovina, believing that Britain’s protest against their annexation by Austria had been too strong. Sir Edward Grey replied, and justified his action in regard to tho Nearer East, Crete, and the Congo. His statement that Russia’s internal condition was no affair of ours, aroused loud protests from the Irish and Labor benches. Ho continued that Britain would never have brooked Russian interference in South Africa. He questioned the accuracy of prison statistics, quoted from Prince Kropotkine, and said that in any case tho Russian terrorists themselves bad killed 6000 pepole and wounded 6800 in the same period. Mr Keir Hardie, Dr. Rutherford, Mr Ponsonby, and Mr. John Dillon made, •impassioned denunciations of the Czar. Mr. Mac Neill (Irish ‘ Nationalist) declared that tho largest Dreadnought might he easily floated in the innocent blood shed in Russia.
Mr. Victor Grayson (Socialist) said: “Bad as Britain is, in its treatment of its poor, it is too good to have its traditions besmirched by contact with this exceptional monster.” A motion to reduce Sir Edward Grey’s salary was lost by 187 to 79.
