Noble Armstrong, Laver, Bardsley, and Cotter were omitted from the Australian team. Rain delayed the start. When play cvommenced the weather was brightening. The wicket was good. Rickman, the Derbyshire captain, won the toss. Wright and Morton opened tiie innings. Three runs were scored off Whitty’s first over. From the first hall that O’cohnor sent down Wright -was smartly caught at the'slips. One for 3. Cadman, stepping in front of an off break of O’Connor’s had liis leg stump removed. The sooro still remained at three. A fine catch by Carter at third mail in the second attempt, disposed of Chapman. Three for 17. O’Connor moved Morton’s offstump with a swerver. Four for 45. Whitty captured Sale without any addition to the score. A blustering wind was causing the ball to swing. Needham was beaten by a swerving ball from O’Connor. Six for 46. One run later O’Connor, running in took a return from Oliver. Seven for 47. Warren and Humphries made the best stand of the day. Warren, after a good display, sent an easy catch back to O’Connor. Eight for 102. • A remarkable catch by Macartney, who, running away at mid-off took a right hander, disposed of Rickman. Nine for 110. Humphries was taken easily at mid-off. O’Connor’s' first six wickets were captured at a cost of 12 runs. When stumps wore drawn Australia had lost four wickets for 217, the scores being:— AUSTRALIA. —Ist Innings. Mac Alister, run out 1 Gregory, c Needham, b Morton ... 24 Hansford, c Humphries, b Warren 18 Trumper, not out ... 100 Macartney, lbw, b Morton ... *35 Hopkins, not out 39 A bad start was made. Mac Alister was run out second ball. One for 1. Hansford joined Gregory. The former, playing free cricket, ended by putting up a skyer. Two for 29. Gregory, after a careful innings, was taken at second slip. He gave a chance off Warren when he had scored 8. Three for 81. Trumper and Macartney carried the total to 117 before the latter was dismissed. Trumper was two hours at the wickets, and gave an exhibition of faultless, brilliant driving, cutting, and pulling. His half-century took 80 minutes to make. Hopkins also showed sound play. The attendance was 15,000.
