The mail train from Rona met a terrible fate 175 miles from Brisbane yesterday. The train was rushing over a small bridge, when it collapsed, wrecking the engine, three carriages, and a mail yan. Two men, Reeves, a commercial traveller, and Mackie, were killed outright, and 11 injured. (Received July 26, 1 a.m.)
The bridge was under repair at the, tinie of its collapse. Luckily it was a low structure, the overturned carriage dropping only sft. The engine remained on the line. Several chains of permanent way were torn up. A special train conveying doctors was quickly on the scene. Eighteen persons were injured, the majority slightly. The most serious cases are those of Souter, Morgan, G. Lasson, Scanlan, Nagen, and Thorn, who were suffering either from broken arms or severe bruises and shock.
