THE ELECTION OF A SPEAKER. WILD SCENE OF DISORDER. United Press Association— (Copyhigut MELBOURNE, July 29. The election o-f the Speaker was characterised by a wild scene of disorder. Laborites objected to the Goverm—selection of a candidate in caucus. They made a violent attack, and moved the adjournment of the House. The voting was equal. The Clerk of the House raised a storm by saying that he gave his vote for continuance of the debate. Alembers demanding to know who gave him the right to vote, Mr Deakin came to-the Clerk’s assistance, pointing out that tho standing orders provided under the circumstances that on an equal division, a debate must proceed. Tho Labor party nominated Mr MacDonald, Chairman of Committees. Finally Dr Salmon was elected by 37 to 29.

He proposes the appointment of a committee of advice in connection with the High Commissionersliip, in which Lords Jersey and Northcote and other prominent men in London with large Australian interests will be asked to join. Ho also indicated that the Defence Bill would be dealt with at an early date, and said that tho heads of the report on’ tlie Australian general staff proposal would be cabled to tho House
