SHOPLIFTING. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, July 29. The shoplifting case was mentioned again to-day, when William Stowe and Florence Emma Stowe came up for sentence on a charge of stealing goods to the value of £2 os. The sub-inspector stated that the man had been convicted in Auckland, and had been suspected of shoplifting. The accused were sent to gaol for a month. AN OPIUM CASE. The case against Ah Chong, which was adjourned from yesterday in order that an analysis might be made of the contents; of an opium pipe which accused was smoking, was again before the. Court to-day. A. A. Bickcrton, Coverment analyst, who had made an examination, said that the substance was opium. Through the medium of an interpreter the accused pleaded that lie had not actually smoked the opium when the police arrived on the scene. A fine of £1 and costs was inflicted. ASSAULT AND ROBBERY—PERPETRATORS IDENTIFIED. The two men who were arrested by Constables O’Cofinor and Torrance for breaking and entering a nursing home have been identified by the victims of tlio assault and robbery case near the Imperial Hotel as her assailants. THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE. The Hon. Dr. Findlay, AttorneyGeneral and Minister of Justice, arrived in Christchurch this morning for the purpose of officially opening the new Magistrate’s Court building. He will leave for Timaru by the second express to-morrow, and deliver a political speech in the evening. The Minister will return to Wellington by Saturday night’s steamer.
