GISBORNE BOWLING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. . The annual meeting of the Gisborne Bowling'Club was .held last night in the Farmers’ Union rooms. Mr W. Pettie, president of the club, occupied the chair, and there was a very large attendance or members. An apology for non-attendance was received from the Hon. Jas. Carroll, who telegraphed his disappointment at not being able to be present at the meeting, and expressed his best wishes for the success of the club. ‘ The secretary read the • following report : “In presenting our annual report, your committee have again to congratulate the members on the continued prosperity of the club, and the very satisfactory season iust 'brought to a close. The grounds have been open for a se;ison of ten months, commencing with the time-honored custom of a match on opening day, October Bth, between the president and vice-presi-dent, which resulted in a win for the president by 8 points. Ten rinks competed, the scoring being 94 against 86. The club membership continues strong, registering 55 active and some 39 honorary members. The balancesheet, duly audited by Mr. C. P. Davies, exhibits a credit balance, of £116.15s 2d in the bank, while £75 stands in Building Society shares, also £39 6s in the Post Office Savings Bank. At the championship fours tournament, held in Nanier, in January last, our club was represented by Messrs. Crawford, F. A. Afartin, F. AY. Eure, and AV. Pettie, .who succeeded in putting up a very good fight, but failed to gain any ; of the coveted honors. During the year the best of three games wds played between the Turanganui Club and the Gisborne Club, when most enjoyable afternoons were spent, twice' on the Turanganui green and once at home. These games were all of a very exciting character, and tend to cement the good feeling existing between the clubs. AVe would suggest to the incoming committee the' desirability of making these games annual fixtures. A team of bowlers also visited AVairoa, and were heartily received by the AYairoa bowlers during the carnival week, playing two games during their stay, and scoring a majority of 46. The team comeased ■ Messrs. Barry, J. F. Pettie, J. Lucas, and J. J. Martin (skip). First Handicap Fours: . This event brought out a field of 12 rinks (48 players), for trophies presented by Mr. AV. J 7 Hennessy. the winners being Messrs. Kyme, Morgan, F. AV. Pettie, and T. Corson. Handicap Pairs: Twenty-four rinks (43 players) competed for this event;., trophies presented by Mr. F, A. Martin: winners: Messrs. AV. P alt ridge and F. AV. Pettie. Handicap Singles, tro--pliies presented by D.I.C. and Mr. A. Zachariah: No less than 46 entries were received for this event, hut owing to the time limit, several members were struck out, the winner being H. Macintosh, AV. J. P. Gaudin second. Second Handicap Fours, for gold tnedals, presented by Mr J. H. Martin: Twelve rinks (48 members) entered for this event and very great interest was shown throughout the various games, but owing to Shield matches and visits paid to Turanganui green, the season was far advanced before tne final of this game was played, the winning team being Messrs. G> Boulton, 0. Hansen, E. Lewis, and F: A. Martin (scr).
| Champion Cup, presented by Mr. AY. J Pettie, for annual competition, winner to receive a gold medal from club: Considerable interest was shown' in this event, some 26 members entering for same, . which was divided into three sections, player against player, the largest number of wins to decide the section. The winners of the sections were Messrs. J. J. Martin, F. AV. Pottie, and M. Craig. Mr. J. J. Martin succeeded in beating both F AV. I’ettio aucl M. Craig, and becomes the champion for the year. Craig, in, the play-off with Pettie, received second trophy, a handsome Kaiapoi rug, donated by that company. through Mr. C. H. Hobbs, their Gisborne representative. Shield matches: Great interest was again shown by the various districts to compete for this honor, the committee having altered the city boundary to give that district a better chance. Kaiti players again proved their superiority by beating City, AVest End, and Whataupoko. That district is again to have its names placed on the shield, the following teams being the victors:— Messrs. R. AV. Kyme, F. AV, Pettie, G. Ambridge, F. AV. Eure (skip) and AV. R. Clarkson, 11. Mackintosh, M. Craig, and J. Ponsford (skip). Your committee regret having been unable to compete for many other trophies presented, but have written to the various donors asking that the same may stand • good for the new season, and in every instance the same will be granted. Special thanks are due to the various donors — Messrs. AV. Pettie, Hennessy, F. A. Martin. A. Zachariah, Distillery Company, Ltd., and Kaiapoi AVoollen Company. Your committee desire to record its deep sorrow at the death of Mrs. J. AV. AVitty, wife of our most esteemed member, and on behalf of the club, forwarded a wreath as a token of condolence, which was acknowledged bv the family. Special thanks are also due to the local papors for their kind assistance and many favors shown during the season, and to one and all who have assisted in making the season a success: to the handicapper, Mr. T. A. Crawford, the ground committee, and especially to pur lady friends for many kindnesses-shown during the year.” In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, the president congratulated members on the continued prosperity of the club, and the excellent position in which it stood to-day. He referred to tho fact that the club had been open for a season of ten months, for which they had to thank the very favorable climate of the district. He was glad that the membership kept strong, and up to the standard of past years. The total number of members on the roll was 94, and he felt sure that the coming season would bring the membership into three figures. He would like to mention the success attending the representative team at Napier, who, although not securing the championship, had got eight wins out of eleven games. They •had also had friendly competitions with tho Turanganui Club, and ' he would like to compliment this young chib on the great improvement they had shown. A team had also gone to AVairoa, and had been successful, and he hoped to see the AVairoa team visit Gisborne in tho coming season. The club competitions had been most interesting, and some excellent rday had been witnessed. On the financial position he claimed that members must feel -uito satisfied with,,the result of the year’s operations. AVit-h regard to the new pavilion, be felt they were in a position to put up a building worthy of the club, and he hoped that before long they would have a suitable clubhouse. Mr. AV. J. Hennessy seconded the motion for. the adoption of the report. Several members spoke, expressing tlieir satisfaction at \ the report and balance-sheet, and the motion on being put to the meeting was carried unanimously. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year was then proceeded with, and resulted as follows:—President, Mr AA 7 . Pettie (re-elected); vice-president, Air. AA 7 . J. Hennessy (re-elected) ; secretary and treasurer, Mr._H. Mackintosh ; committee, Messrs T. A. Crawford F. AA 7 . Eure, T. Adair; T. Corson, J. Ponsford ; auditor, Mr. C. P. Davies (re-elected). Tt was decided that the caretaker be granted a bonus of £5, and it was made a recommendation to tho committee to consider the advisableness of raising his salary. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. Paltridge, it was decided that a trophy valued at £5 5s be presented to Mr. C. IT. Ambridge, the retiring secretary, in recognition of his services to the club. It was decided, on the motion of Mr. IT. Miller, seconded by the chairman, that it be a recommendation to tho committee to appoint some member or members to buy a loan, at a favorable opportunity, from the Co-operative Building Society, for the purposes of building a new paviuon. Air. lan Simsori, in accordance with notice, moved that on Thursdays and Saturdays the committee select from all the players present at a given time, a!] those whom they decide shall skip teams, all those whom they .decide shall play No 3, all those whom they decide shall play No. 2 and No. 1, and that the order of whom they shall play for or against shall, in every instance, be decided by ballot. The motion was seconded by Air. Boulton, and after some discussion was lost by 21 votes to 18. A schedule of proposals, drawn up by Mr. T. Clarkson, in regard to the playing of competition matches, was - read by the chairman, and on the motion of Mr. Clarkson, seconded by Mr. Mackintosh, it was decided to recommend the committee to carry out the regulations. A hearty vote of thanks to the officers of the club was massed on the motion of Mr. J. Sheridan. ’The prizes won during the past season were then presented by the President as follows:—Handicap ■ Fours: Messrs Corson, F. AV. Pettie, AV. Morgan, and R. AV. Kyme. Handicap Pairs 1 Messrs F. ,AV. Pettie and J. Paltridge. Handicap Singles: Air... H. Mackintosh. Second Handicap Fours: Messrs F. A. Martin, E. Lewis, 0., Hansen,' and L. Boulton. Champion Cup and Medal: Air. J. J. Martin (a travelling rug was also presented to Air. Al. Craig, the runner-up in the i championship competition). : District • Shield : Kaiti teams. . At the conclusion of the meeting, tho members were entertained bv tho' President.
