The Cape Colony delegates desired the Union to become operative on January Ist, fearing a recudescencc of provincial fooling. The rest of tho delegates objected to the first election being held during the winter, when the Transvaal farmers are j,bsont on the low veldt, hut compromised by adopting May 31st. .The Union Parliament is to meet in the September or October following. ■ [May 31 is the anniversary of tho ratification of the Peace of Vcreenigiug, which ended the Boor war.]
