EXPLOSION ON A WARSHIP.

During a Royal .salute tho backfire of one of tho Tcmcraire’s four-inch quick-firers ignited a. second charge before the breach could be closed. An explosion occurred, injuring three seamen severely and one slightly.
ESSAY ON TARIFF REFORM. The first prize of £IOO offered by Mr T. K. Stubbins, formerly of South Australia, through the “Daily Mail,” for 'the best essay on tariff reform for workmen, was awarded to T. Horsfall, of Cheltenham.
TRANSPORT WORK DURING THE BOER WAR. Mr Louston, a member of the House of Commons, was sued by his partner, Collard, for a share of commissions earned in transport work during the Boer war. Collard’s allegations of fraud and conspiracy were withdrawn.
EXPELLED FROM THE MIDDLE TEMPLE. Chattopad Hyuya has been exipelled from the Middle Temple owing to opinions expressed in two letters to the “Times” on Indian affairs. THE DREADNOUGHT DEBATE. BERLIN, August 1. The North 1 German “Gazette” expresses satisfaction at the tone of tho Dreadnought debate. Mr Asquith’s declaration that tho British programme is inspired solely out of regard for the safety of tho country represents the idea which alone governs tho German naval policy.
NEW SOUTH WALES RAILWAYS. SYDNEY, August 2. The Railway Commissioner’s annual report shows that 52,051,000 people were carried on the railways during the year without loss of life. The net result, after providing working expenses and interest, is a surplus of £388,000. Tho tramways resulted in a surplus of £79,000, being £5 12s 2d per cent, of tho capital invested. There were 186.315,000 passengers carried without loss of life.
BLAGKFELLOW ARRESTED FOR MURDER, BRISBANE, August 2. Dick, an aboriginal, has been arrested for the murder of a - man named Clements or Skinner a few months ago. lie was shot dead while sitting in his camp with his mate at Chinchilla, fflie police tracked Dick for 500 miles.
