DEPUTATION TO MINISTER IN CHRISTCHURCH. (Per Press Association.' CHRISTCHURCH, August 2, A deputation from an unemployed committee,-introduced by Messrs Witty, l)avev, and Taylor, M.P.’s, waited on the lion. Roderick McKenzie to-day. They had a long interview, urging that as 238 men, mostly tradesmen, were unemployed, a commencement should bo made with the demolition of the old building behind the Cathedral in Worcester Street, on the site of which it is proposed to erect new Government offices at a cost of £66,000. The work was of a class the tradesmen could easily do. They also urged the starting of new Government buildings at Sydenham and Addington, giving preference for work in the city to married men, and sending single men to the railway works at Broken River. There was a lengthy talk, in which Mr. McKenzie stated that it was not proposed to undertake more than half tho work at present (£33,000), and he would communicate with his colleagues as to beginning tho work of demolition immediately. The other matters would have consideration. THE POSITION AT NAPIER. NAPIER, August 2. Tho Citizens’ Relief Committee still have a fairly large number of unemployed men on their books, and are appealing for more funds.
