WORK AND WAGES.

CARPENTERS’ AND JOINERS’ SOCIETY.

(Per Press Association.' WELLINGTON, August 3

Delegates representing the various branches of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and .Joiner* in New Zealand met at Wellington yesterday at> the Town Hall. The principal object of the meeting was to try to improve the financial condition" of the society in New Zealand. The society is at present going through a heavy financial strain, owing to the large number- of unemployed members in various parts of the world. The conference will endeavor to devise some scheme - whereby the rules can be altered to beneficially affect the position in the Dominion. Here there are numerous benefits conferred by the Legislature, such as compensation for accidents, old age pensions, etc. In other countries there are no such benefits, and the New Zealand society is taxed proportionately with others towards thy payment of benefit funds. This is. regarded by some members as unjust, and a separate system of financial control is urged. It is expected that a good deal of discussion will result. Yesterday the time was almost wholly taken up in discussing preliminaries. The delegates attending the conference .are as follows: Wellington Central —G. Blatherwick; 'ellington North—C. Anger; Wellington East —J. Stobart: Wellington South —W. Wagstaff; Brooklyn— Jas. Barras; Auckland —H. Baufield : Dunedin—J. Brown; Christchurch—F. A. Moody; Petone —IV. Green : Lower Hutt—J. Ball: Napier—M. Hoskings ; Hastings —A. W. Aperley : Gisborne—J. Scott; Wanganui—W. Rafhbone; Rotorua — F. P. Hayes; Nelson —W. Choel. Sir. Wagstaff was elected chairman, Mr. Brown vice-chairman, and Air. F. Slater, representing North Wellington, conference secretary.
