HOOKEY.
(By “Circle.”) Last Thursday's matches were not of a very high order. "West End were lucky in beating Civil Service by 1 goal, and it was only by their captain’s exertions that this was accomplished. Neither team played up to their usual form, and Civli Service lest many opportunities in the first half. West End have lost the services of Malloy, who has been playing very well this season, and was most likely to be selected as “bully” for the rep. team. The second game between City ami Kia Ivaha was easily won by the former team by 4 goals to nil, but the Kias, playing three men short, put up a very good effort to avert defeat. It is to be regretted that they arc always handicapped in this manner, as they play good hockey. j I see West End and City are drawn to play their next match on tlie 30th., the last day of the competition. This match should be a good finale to the season., and will probably decide which club will secure, the honor of holding the Championship Shield for 1909. The Napier Civil Service Club propose visiting Gisborne when a convenient day can be arranged, in order to play a match against tho local Civil Service team. As the Napier club have an enviable reputation,, and are regarded as the most formidable combination in Hawke’s Bay, their visit will be eagerly looked forward to by local players. The local Hockey Association have good cause to complain of their treat•ment by the Auckland Association. Early in the season Auckland were asked to fix a date'on which to play tho local representatives for the New Zealand Challenge Shield, and so far have refused, notwithstanding repeated requests to do so. As they state they will not .play on Monday, Thursday, or Friday, the only days suitable' for the local team, the thing that can be done is to ask the New Zealand Hockey Association to fix a date. Of course Auckland finds it difficult to meet all the challenging teams at their own time, but as the local' challenge was put in early in the season, and has been’ ignored for the convenience of other .challengers, it is time a definite date was appointed. It will probably he early in September, if Auckland does not lose against some other team in the meantime. It 'is reported that a ladies’ club has been formed at Makauri, and that ■ challenge will shortly be issued to the Gisborne Ladies’ team. There is no reason why these ladies’* clubs should not' be more numerous. There is no winter .game equal to hockey for ladies, and it is to be hoped that next season will see tho. advent of clubs in Kaiti, Wliataupoko, and other suburbs. It is safe te assume that once a young lady has known the delights of the game she will become an ardent follower of it. TO-MORROW’S PLAY. Only one hockey shield match will bo played at the Domain to-morrow afternoon, that between. West End and Y.M.C.A., commencing at 2.45 p.m. sharp. The following will represent Y.M.C.A. in their match against West End tomorrow afternoon : Goal, Ngira ; hacks, Munro and Rewai; halves, Davey, Pine, and Auld; forwards. Baker, Brown, Davey, Russell, Ellison ; emergency, J. Clark. HOCKEY ASSOCIATION. The usual weekly meeting of tho Hockey Association was held last night in tlie Royal Hotel. Tliere was a good attendance of delegates, and in tliO s absence of the president', Mr. 0. 11.' Olsen occupied the chair. A letter was read from the secretary of the Kia Kaha club, stating thatowing to their inability to raise a team it was the intention of the club to disband and withdraw from the competition . It was resolved that tlie letter be received with regret. The secretary of the West End club wrote asking that as the Kia Ivaha club was disbanding, three of their players be granted transfers to the West End club. . Considerable discussion followed the reading of the letter, and it was even-; tually decided that the matter be held over until the next meeting of the Association. A circular was forwarded from fcnd secretary of the New Zealand Hockey Referees’ Associations’ conference,, containing the resolutions, recommendations, and penalties discussed and adopted at the recent conference in Wanganui.
