IL L-TREATIN'G PIGS
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 5. At the Police Court, Darno! Ryan, butcher, was fined £2 and costs tor cruelly ill-treating five pigs by ‘d>httnig their ears. Mr Cutton, S.M., said. 4o butchers sent pigs to the abfeatoirs.. Defendant was the only one who iounct it necessary to adopt spatting as a method of identification. He was ot opinion that defendant • acted cruelly, though perhaps unintentionally so. ' A FOOLISH HOAX. The following is a copy of a message found by the caretaker at Broun s Island in a pickle bottle washed ashore yesterday: “May 20, 1909 Barque Saint Etna, Noumea to Chili, leaking. No food. New Zealand coast.in sight. Captain dead., Send help, for God s sake. —Signed, H. Cobey. ’ Later. —Investigation of the "message from the sea” appears to conclusively prove | the affair is a hoax. The bottle bears the label of a New Zealand firm, and the cork is almost new. RAIN IN ORQUA DISTRICT.

Arthur Wimsett was to-day committed for trial on further charges connected with robberies from the Parcels Department of the Wellington Past Office. A CHARGE OF BIGAMY. CHRISTCHURCH, August -5. As the reult of an inquest on a child named Meyei.s, which was held yesterday, Station-Sergeant Johnston and Constable Jackson made some inquiries regarding the father. Their investigations revealed the fact-that he had been married to two women, and had four children by his first wife and one by his second wife. He gave his names as John Whit ford and Meyers. He was arrested on a charge of bigamy. FIRE AT SUMNER.
By a fire in the nursery of a seven-teen-roomed house at Sumner this morning, damage estimated at £2OO was done. The outbreak was caused by clothes, airing in front of a fire, getting alight. ~ Fortunately, an infant had been removed from the nursery to an adjoining room when the parents went downstairs for breakfast. The house was owned and occupied by Mr. Norman Dalston. The building ,:s insured for £9OO, and the contents for ..TOO in the Royal-Office. THE CHRISTCHURCH “PRESS.”
Mr. W. H. Triggs lias joined the board of directors of the Christchurch “Press” Company. It is understood that Mr. Triggs will continue the editorial control of the "'Press.” FIRE IN TIMARU. TIMARU, August 5. A fire at 3 o’clock this morning destroyed a five-roomed dwelling in Regent Street, owned and occupied by R. C. Campbell and family. The occupants were roused by the crackling caused by the flames, and with difficulty escaped in night attire only. The insurances were: State office £4OO on the dwelling "and £2OO on the- furniture.
