DOES MRS EDDY LIVE?
STATEMENT FROM A CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MEMBER. Oiice again the report is systematical ly circulated (writes the New York correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph”) that Airs Eddy, founder of the Christian Science Church, is either dead or lias lost her reason. Two years ago similar .-’rumors were exhaustively discussed, iand -it was even said that a dummy dressed up to resemble Airs Eddy is now supposed to live at Brookline, outside Boston. The whole trouble, I think, is due to the fact that the' church is immensely rich, and a certain section of its leaders labor under the belief that Airs’ Eddy is entirely at\ the mental mercy of an unscrupulous group of her followers. A proclamation which lias been made public recently is signed “Delia Gilbert. 7 ’ She is a' lady who announced some months ago that she proposed to hold Christian Science meetings at the fashionable Plaza hotel .in this city; She says: “The Christian Science Church is without a spiritual leader in the flesh. Those In control of the mother church at Boston and that house of mystery in Brookline, the falsely avowed home of the living and thriving Alary Baker G. Eddy, cannot successfully refute this assertion. Airs Eddy is either dead or a helpless, mindless puppet in the hands of conscienceless I’men. 1 ’men. This truth has been revealed to me, and'in humble obedience to the will of God I will onenly declare the facts. “AAlthin the last'three weeks I have been within the so-called home of Airs. Eddy, and have studied at close range the fraud, trickery, and revolting mystery by which the Boston organisation, seeks to perpetuate the 'pernicious fiction of an unseen and unseeable leader. This profane .mockery will continue_ indefinitely unless honest Christian Scientists who worship God and not a fetish or a poor old woman’s name combine to expose and exterminate the fraud. The time has come when Christian must purge itself of dishonesty. Alary Baker Eddy lives now in history only; that name honored by all of us has become the breastwork of falsity and frqud. I say this in the. deepest loya]ty to the-cause of Christian Science, and in the truest devotion to the memory of the woman through whom God revealed the truth and gave the world sciencehealing. But the hour is at hand for reorganisation of the faith on tlie lines of honesty, unity, and purity.” It remains to he seen what effects this trumpet-call “to all Christian Scientists” to crown the new queen will have upon tlie devotees of Airs Eddy, many of whom seem to expect one day to witness her translation.
