IMPERIAL POLITICS.

AN IRISH BY-ELECTION.

MR LLOYD-GEORGE’S LIMEHOUSE SPEECH CONTRADICTED.

Unitkd Purrs- Association Copyright

(Received August 6, 10.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 6,

In the election for North Sligo, Mr. Scanlan, Nationalist, was returned unopposed, replacing the late Mr McHugh (Nationalist). Mr Lloyd-George’s Limehouse speech, giving instances of landowners’ selfishness, has been strongly contradicted in the specific cases mentioned. The Duke of Westminster, in reply to several correspondents, urging him to prosecute Mr. Lloyd-Georgo for misstatements, declares that considering the Chancellor’s personal idiosyncrasies, the best defence is to trust in the fairness and sense of decency still inherent in the community.

TO RELIEVE SHOP ASSISTANTS. BILL INTRODUCED BY MR GLADSTONE. . LONDON, August 5. Mr Gladstone, Secretary for Home Affairs, introduced the Shops Bill, fixing a shop assistant’s maximum period of labor at GO hours per week. Employment after 8 o’clock is only allowed on three days. The Bill includes compulsory Sunday closing and a weekly half-holiday. It is not intended to pass the Bill during; the present session.
