Although it was their first match this season, the Aucklanders showed splendid combination, and the pace and tackling abilities of their forwards frequently nonplussed the opposing rearguard, of whom Anderson, Avery and Nicoll were the most prominent. Owing to recent rains, the ground was on the'heavy side. CANTERBURY DEFEATS WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, August 7. The Canterbury hockey representative team beat Wellington to-day by two goals to nil.
