THE WEIGHT OF BREAD.
NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN ORDINARY AND FANCY VARIETIES.
[Feu Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, August 9. A deputation from the executive of the New Zealand United. Bakers’ Association waited ou the Minister of Health in regard to the fancy bread difficulty. He pointed out that the Act makes no distinction between ordinary loaves, - and that- if a fancy loaf is found underweight the seller is liable to proseeution. This was considered a hardship, seeing that fancy loaves have in most cases to undergo a second baking. They asked , that the Act be amended in the direction of bakers being allowed to advertise such bread, which, would only be delivered on special order, and that bakers would not be responsible for the full weight.' Hie Minister thought it was a better way out of the difficulty if subsection 3 opspetion 26 of the Act made the seller responsible fort selling underweight bread, “unless he states its true weight to the buyer'at the time of sale.” In fact the Act provided a way out of the difficulty. In selling fancy bread a baker need only inform a customer of its exapt weight, and by doing so ho would ~ relieve himself ot responsibility. The Department did not care about" prosecutions. It was anxious to see the Act administered without friction.
