A SLANDER ACTION,
(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, August 10. In the Supreme Court to-day, the action brought by Dr. A. H. Hallen against Samuel Crawford, chairman of the Te Puke Road Board and a member of the Tauranga County Council, for slander was concluded, the jury awarding plaintiff £SO. HAWKE’S BAY EDUCATION BOARD NAPIER, August 10. Mr W. G. Hunter was elected to represent the south ward on the Education Board, the voting being as follows: W. G. Hunter SU. Canon Eocles 54, D. Wilson 45. PRISONER'S RASH ACT. WELLINGTON ..August 10. Solomon Levy, undergoing sentence of two years, recently brought from Auckland, snatched up a shoemaker’s knife at the Terrace Gaol on Saturday, and gashed his throat, inflicting an ugly wound. TREATMENT OF PRISONERS. The Rev. James Kayll, adviser to the Prisons Department regarding the scientific treatment of prisoners, leftlast night for the South to visit the various gaols in that island. THE GOVERNOR. CHRISTCHURCH, August 10. His Excellency the Governor, Lord Plunket, arrived from Wellington by the Maori this morning.
