TARANAKI DEFEATS MANAWATU

[Pint Press Association.] PALMERSTON N., August 11. Taranaki v defeated Manawatu at football to-day by 14 to nil. The contest was not so one-sided as might have been expected, Manawatu holding their own throughout the first spell and most of the second. The home forwards were superior to_ the visitors on the line-out and in tight and loose work, though Taranaki got the ball well from the scrums. Only towards the end of the *gaine Taranaki scored, putting on points quickly. The home team had not the condition to finish as the visitors had. The visiting backs were also superior.

NEW ZEALANDERS IN AUSTRALIA PONSONBY DEFEATS NEWTOWN. United Press Association —Copyright (Received August 11, 7.33 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 11. In the' Ponsonby-Newt-own match, Ponsonby at half-time had scored 9 points to Newtown’s 3. The final score was: Ponsonby 14, Newton 6. Special interest was attached to the match as it decided tho club championship of Australasia.' The weather was dull, with dropping ram. The attendance was about Sooo.' Newtown were handicapped by the absence of two of the selected men, who met with slight accidents during the morning. Their places were taken by less prominent players. Midway through the second half Booth was also disabled, some of his ribs being broken.' The visitors showed to better advantage throughout. Early in the game McGregor, taking advantage of a mull, scored a smart try. The visitors pressed heavily, and some fine scrum work and a superb rush ended in Hall getting over. O’Leary failed in both instances to convert. Murray added a third try, but Webb missed the goal. Newtown’s only score was a penalty goal kicked by Russell. In the second spell Newtown added a penalty goal by Russell. For Ponsonby, McGregor got ,a good try from a cross kick by Gillett, O’Leary converting.

MAORIS DEFEAT QUEENSLAND. . BRISBANE, August 11. The Maoris heat Queensland by 36 points to 25. (Received August 11, 11.55 p.m.)

The visitors found Queensland more than a match during the first half, which ended: Queensland 17, Maoris 12, Asher, who played brilliantly, having four unconverted, tries to his credit. In the second half play was fast and furious. Kaulitai, Hair a, and Ratete obtained tries in quick succession, Asher converting the last two. Tuike added the fourth, Ratete another, and Taomui adding the extra points. Later just before no-time sounded, Asher crossed the line again. The kick at goal failed. At the close of the game several thousand spectators rushed the ground and made hostile demonstrations against the visitors.

THE AUSTRALIAN GAME. A match between the Imperials and the Rovers will be played this afternoon on the League's ground, near Grey Street bridge.
