AN ABSENT BANKRUPT

[Per Press Association.l AUCKLAND, August 12

A meeting of creditors this morning discussed the best method of procedure in the absence of,a ban’krupt, Frank A. Cooper, acetylene gas expert, whose whereabouts cannoUbe ascertained. It was stated that the debts amounted to about £2OO. It was arranged that the Assignee should arrange for an examination of the books and report to a future meeting of creditors.

EIRE AT KAI IWI. i WANGANUI; August 12. A store and dwelling at Kai Iwi, owned by H. Robinson, and occupied by J. W. Harvey, was totally destroyed by fire early this morning. The building and stock were insured, but the storekeeper is a heavy loser. The insurances are not availame.

A NEW LOCAL INDUSTRY. HASTINGS, August 12. E. Dimant, of Melbourne, succeeded, in selling to a New Zealand syndicate for £20.000 sterling the right to manufacture leather-rubber in the Dominion, and a company, with a capital of £40.000 (over subscribed) has been floated to manufacture. Many articles of commerce are now made of ordinary leather and rubber, the waste products of which make leather-rubber. Ninety per cent, of the capital was raised, in Hawke’s Bay. The factory will be in Hastings, and the manufacture will commence early next year.

A CONVICTION AFFIRMED. WELLINGTON, August 12. Justices' Cooper and Chapman this morning affirmed tho conviction of exCoiistable AY. J. Gardiner by Air Riddell, S.M., for assaulting Airs Rolfe in a street fracas in Alay last. Constables Watson and Gardiner were implicated in doubt as to the identity of Mrs Rolfe’s assailant. Air and Mrs Rolfe said that it was Watson, hut failed to identify him. The Alagistrate concluded from other evidence that Gardiner was the assailant, and sentenced him to 21 days’ imprisonment. Gardiner appealed, and the conviction was affirmed with £lO 10s costs. THE AIAORI TROUPE. The Acting-Premier has received word that some members of the Alaori performing troupe, engaged to play at the New A r ork Hippodrome, were refused admission to the Lnited States because tliev were suffering from an eye trouble. The Hon. J. Carroll was asked to intercede, but was reluctant to interfere with the health regulations of another country, and declined.
