AN OVERDUE VESSEL SPOKEN

The overdue barque Guetliary, 126 days from New Caledonia to Glasgow, was spoken on July 13, all well, 38| degrees north by 39 degrees east. [The French barque Guethary left Poro, New Caledonia, on March 27th.]
THE SWEDISH STRIKE. The Board of Trade has warned British workmen against proceeding to Sweden as strike-breakers. THE GOVERNOR-ELECT OF QUEENSLAND. Sir Win. McGregor, Governor-elect of Queensland, has undergone a severe operation, and will be unable to sail before the end of September.
CLOSING NEW SOUTH WALES’ GAOLS. SYDNEY, August 12. In pursuit of a policy of concentration, twenty-four gaols in the State will close on August 16th. The buildings will henceforth be used as lockups. INDIGNANT CHINESE. Owing to a family bereavement, the Chinese Consul-General left for China on a brief visit by a Japanese mail steamer. Chinese residents were so indignant at his travelling by a Japanese vessel that they refused to see him off.
