WAIROA SCHOOL BURRED.
RESULT OF DEFECTIVE CHIMNEY
[Per Prebi? Association.] WAIROA, August 12. The Wairoa District School, accommodating over 200 scholars, was burned to the ground at 9.55 last night. The fire being fanned by a furious southeast gale, everything was soon down, nothing being left but a few sheets of iron. The committee met there at 7 pjm. All was safe. The fire brokeout in a different room, that of ttie second master. There had neen a fire in the grate, but'it had burned out. Tho pupils and teachers had a good many losses in boo.ks. Only th 9 records, the organ, and a few desks were saved. An examination this morning suggests that the fire was caused through a defective chimney, the one at the seat of the fire showing earthquake shakes. It was about five years old. One chimney fell when it lost the support of the building. There is nothing else to account for the fire. , , There was no insurance on the school building burnt. The settlors suggest a new site, the present one being far too small.
