WELLINGTON MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
A HEAVY CHARGE SHEET

Ernest King, alias Keenan, alias Martin, on remand, was yesterday charged in the Magistrate’s Court with (1) stealing £3 from Henry Newton on the 14th July; (2) stealing on the 10th July a gold ring, valued at £22 10s, belonging to H. W. Lloyd, jeweller; and (3) stealing on the 17th July two gold bangles; valued at £4, the property of L. W. Ludwig, jeweller. It was alleged that accused picked Newton’s pocket in a crowd at the door of the Opera House, and evidence supporting the other informations stated that he had entered the jewellers’ shops purporting to be desiring to buy goods, and bad fraudulently appropriated valuable property. Accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial." Richard Thomas Power, alias Richard Francis, appeared on remand on ten informations of breaking and entering various premises and stealing small sums of money or goods ranging in value up to £5. The evidence went to show that the accused, armed with skeleton keys, adopted “artful dodger” methods and various bluffs to elude the arm of the law. He pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. On a charge of stealing £1 from John N Ferguson he was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. It was mentioned that lie bad been convicted of theft some time ago. Herbert Pyke and Harry McGill, two well-dressed young men, were committed for trial on charges of breaking and entering the shop of Sydney Dromgool, and stealing leather goods and clothing to the value of £lB.
A charge of having attempted suicide was made against a man named Solomon Levy in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday". Mr. Millington, gaoler, informed "the Court that accused was serving two years’ sentence in the Terrace gaol. On Saturday morning he was ordered by a warder t-o procure a pair of scissors from an adjoining room. \Vhile away, Levy attempted to kill himself by means of a bootmaker s knife, but only succeeded in inflicting some slight wounds to his throat. Accused had earned good conduct marks equalling 159 days. Mr. W. G. Riddell.' S.M., ordered that accused must forfeit seven days’ marks.
