In the second spell Austin scored for Gisborne, and though the Alhambra players worked hard to even matters the blues hold their own until time was called.

CITY (3) v. STAR (nil). This was a fast and exciting game. Scrgt-Major Burr refereed, and was particularly strict. He Kept the players well in hand, and late in the game had to assert his authority by ordering two men off the field. Soon after the start Witty scored for City. Puflett took the kick., but failed to convert. The game then became rough and fast. Star tried hard to score, but lacked combination, and time was called without the number of points being increased.

THE AUSTRALIAN GAME. The Poverty Fotball League (Australian Rules) lias received ■word, from the Auckland League that it has been found impossible to send a team ot players to Poverty Bay'"this season, as it had already been aranged that a team shall go to the South Island, and it would be inconvenient to include Gisborne in the itinerary. ' '' The League has also received a ch-al-V lenge from the Hawke’s Bay League to play a game at Gisborne, and it is probable that arrangements will be made for a match to be played in a few weeks’ time. Teams from the Rovers and Imperials met on the League’s ground yesterday afternoon, when Royers were successful in defeating Imperials by 24 points. Both teams lined up short, and were minus some of the best men, but nevertheless a most interesting game was witnessed. Imperials’ skipper won the toss, and elected to kick with the wind, which was blowing very strongly at the time, but soon after the bounce Rovers worked the ball towards their goal, and from a running shot raised one flag. From the kick-off Imperials collared and rushed the ball to their end, where H. Wack was successful in raising both flags. From the bounce Rovers took possession, and soon had the leather in striking distance, a goal being registered by J. Wack. The quarter ended with Imperials 1 goal 2 bebinds, Rovers 1 goal 1 behind. With the change of ends, and aided by a strong wind, Rovers had the best of the play, and W. Tate soon registered a goal. Imperials, however, managed to break through Australs’ defence, and McPherson registered a goal for the black-and-golds. The rest of the quarter saw nearly all the play in Rovers’ territory, and J. Wack was instrumental in potting two goals from running shots. Scores at half time were: Rovers 4 goals 2 bebinds; Imperials 2 goals 3 behTnds. Soon after the bounce in the third quarter, Rovers started scor- / ing, a goal being registered bv Manning, who soon after repeated the. feat, Imperials . also kicked for the quarter 2 o-oals by McPherson and T. Atkinhowever, had much the V/Wfcter of the play, but were very erratic in shooting for goal, seven behmds appearing for the same iiumhex* ox shots. The quarter ended with Rovers still in the lead by 15 points. The fourth quarter opened with very even play, neither team having much advantage. Imperials for the quarter scored 2 goals 2 bebinds, to Rovers’ 3 goals 3 bebinds. When-' the whistle blew for time the final scores were: Rovers, 9 goals 13 bebinds (67 points) ;

The best players for Rovers were Brown. W. Tate, Manning,, and Hopkins; and Imperials were best represented by Woodbury, McPherson, Atkinson (2), and Lund. Mr. Commons controlled the game.
