ENTERTAINMENTS.

PATHE PICTURES. The opening performance of the Pathe Pictures in His Majesty's Theatre last evening drew a crowded audience, and an admirable programme of cinematograph pictures was presented. The powerful light produced by the up-to-date plant; consisting of a 10 horsepower Gardner oil engine, and SO amprere dynamo, with the improved lantern, threw, the pictures upon the screen with wonderful steadiness and marvellous* detail, and the audience loudly applauded each set. The progremme was well varied, and those present were treated to scenes in Egypt and in Palermo, the latter of which included a splendid view of the catacombs of the Church of St. John the Hermit. The city of Ancona and the gardens of the Tuilleries were also splendid views, interesting as well as educative. In dramatic scenes “The Bridge of Sighs” appealed, with its ten so note of sympathy, to a large section of the audience, while “The Cowboy and the Songstress” and “Love and Duty” were original in tlieir conception and full of stirring incident. The humorous pictures were evidently highly appreciated, and "The Hypnotic Policeman,” a man in blue who detects crime by the aid of mesmerism, and “Jimmy as a Stove-fitter'’ —Jimmy dealing very considerably in soot—som the juveniles of the audience wild with delight. “The Magic Album” was an artistically colored film, and showed what wonderful illusions can be produced by the cinematograph. The performance lasted for fullv two hours, and if every programme is of the sameexcellence as that presented last evening, then the Theatre should be crowded at each performance. This afternoon a matinee performance will be given, and the pictures will be shown again to-night, and also on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday an exhibition will be given at Waerenga-a-hika, on Thursday at Ormond, and on Friday at Te Karaka.
