CHARGES OF UNSEAWORTHINESS

[Per FuKfis Association.] WELLINGTON, August 13. In the Magistrate’s Court, the collector of Customs prosecuted Sebastian Newson on charges of (1) sending the ketch Ilona to sea in such an unseaworthy condition that lives were likely to be endangered, and (2) being a party to sending the .vessel to sea. It was stated on behalf of the informant that the case was a serious one. The ketch belonged to Mr Russo, but was under charter to defendant and another to proceed to Palliser Bay to attempt to salvage the Ben Avon. The vessel left port in a leaking condition, and foundered in Palliser Bay.. Fortunately the crew reached shore in safety. Defendant pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
