NAPIER DEFEATS POVERTY BAY
(Special to “Times.”) NAPIER, August 13. There vAvas glorious Aveatlier for the match between the Poverty Bay and Napier Golf Clubs, Avhich commenced at 1.30 p.m. to-day at the Waiohiki links. Poverty Bay nominated se\-en men for the "Wilson Cup match, Gibson, who had been showing consistent form at practice, being brought up to seventh man. Sixteen men a-side Averc played in the club match and, as expected, the match resulted in an easy win for Napier. Poverty Bay did not score a single Avin in the men’s match. Pare Keiha, after a stubborn fight viritli Kurepo finished all square. Rex. Willock, who played as Gisborne’s ninth man, also managed to halve his game with C. L. Gordon. All the other Gisborne players Avent doAvn to the Napier men. Napier thus won the Wilson Cup by six games to nil, and, the club match by 14 games to nil. The Poverty Bay lac]ies played a 10 a-side match Avith Napier ladies. Miss Daisy Bright covered herself with glory by defeating Mrs. Arthur Kennedy, and thus proving the only Gisborne play 7 er of either sex to record a victory. The professionals, Herd and McCormick, played .a 36-hole match for a purse. McCormick A\-as 2 up On the first round. Herd, however, made amends by winning by 3 up in the afternoon, and thus Avon by 1 up. Both professionals took exactly the same number of strokes, 167, for the tAVO rounds.
The Napier dub members have treated the Gisborne players most hospitably, and the latter have enjoyed thentrip immensefy. Mrs. Levine,, secretary of the Napier Ladies’ Club, looked after the Gisborne ladies well. The following were the results of the first seven players competing in the Wilson Cup : Kurepo Tareha and Pare Iveiha —all square. Kapi Tareha beat Dodgshun. Thorburn beat G. Willock. Smith beat A. Miss Bright- beat Mrs. Kennedy. The Poverty Bay team left for Gisborne at 7 p.m., being farewelled by a large number of Napier friends.
