FIRES.
HbUSE BURNED AT TE ARAL
The residence of Mr. Alexander Gibson, of Te Arai, was totally destroyed by fire at about 12.30 on Saturday night. The house was of weatherboard, consisting of four rooms. Mr. Gibson was asleep in the house at the time, and was awakened by the sound of falling timber, and on opening his bedroom door the flames burst into the room, and he was compelled to leave the house by the window. The fire had such a hold that nothing could be done to save the building or its contents. The house was insured in the Victoria Insurance Company’s office. _
SMALL FIRE IN GREY STREET
A second alarm of. fire was , given shortly after 6 o’clock last evening for a fire discovered at the shop of Mr. Walter Howard, painter and paperhanger, Grey Street. The fire brigade promptly turned out, and on entering the premises found a partition which divides Mr. Howard’s shop from Mr. Shelton’s lolly shop was on fire. The hose was at once turned on, and the blaze promptly extinguished. No one ivas in Mr. Howard’s shop at the time time, the place being securely locked up on Saturday night, so that the origin of the fire is unknown. Some art studies, scrim, and dry paint were damaged by the fire and water, but Mr. Howard estimates that £2O will cover his loss. The stock was insured in the South British Insurance Company. The building, which was somewhat damaged, belongs to Mr. P. Sheridan, and is insured in the Australian Alliance Office for £250.
