BIG FIRE IN AUCKLAND.

[Per Press Association.! AUCKLAND, August 16. One of the most magnificent of Auckland's buildings, the Strand Arcade, belonging to Messrs Campbell } Elirenfried and Co., three storeys high, and running from Queen Street to Elliott Street, was totally gutted to-night. The flames broke out shortly after eight, and had soon increased to great dimensions, the interior of the building being nothing but a roaring fur-: naee. At first it looked as if tho buildings on either side, the Albert Hotel and the Thistle Hotel, would bo doomed but thanks to the skilfulness of the firemen they were both saved, and the flames bv nine o’clock had been practically subdued. The amount of tho damage, and tlie insurances aro not yet available.
