BACTERIOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY

THE GOVERNMENT’S INTENTIONS

O’er Press Association../ WELLINGTON, August 17. With reference to a paragraph published. by the “Otago Daily Times” to the effect that the Otago University Council desired to secure the appointment of a professor of bacteriology and pathology, the Hon. D. Buddo, Minister of Public Health, yesterday informed a “Times” representative that some misconception had apparently arisen. He was waited upon by Dr Batchelor and Mr Arnold, M.P., of Dunedin, on the subject, and the Minister expressed his willingness to assist the university authorities in obtaining the services of a professor for this purpose. This expression of willingness was evidently misconstrued by the “Otago Daily Times,” which had announced that the Minister had intended to establish a bacteriological department in each of the four centres. “It is not intended to do this,” Mr. Buddo said, “as the present provision in Wellington meets the demands made on it, but it is intended to specialise with the services of various district health officers, who will each take up special work, for which they hold special diplomas and certificates.”
