WATERSIDE WORKERS’ CONFER

ENCE. (Pint Pkkss Association.] WELLINGTON, August 18. The following resolutions were passed at the Waterside Workers Conference: That steps be taken to secure that the power of discharging men be limited to tbe foreman in charge of a job; that employers be asked to agree t-o a standard of adequate sleeping accommodation to be provided for men on outport work; that steps be taken to check men in holds making slings in excess of weights provided under awards; that a claim be made for equal overtime rates of pay for all men engaged in -outport work.

PROPOSED CHRISTCHURCH CANAL. CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. Reports of a committee set up to consider tlie financial aspect of the proposed ship canal to Christchurch were disesused at length by the Lytteltos Harbor Board to-day, and the meeting adjourned for a fortnight*, no vote being taken. LAND FOR SETTLEMENT. Speaking at Oxford to-day, the Hon. i). the supply of land tor settlement in small areas was rapidly coming to an end. By 1912 nearly all the land under survey would have gone. SNIOAV AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, August IS. The weather during the past few days has been very unsettled. A heavy downpour of rain has occurred, and the thermometer has been low. A slight lull of snow took place to-night. SALE OF DRAUGHT STOCK. OAMAItU, August 18. There was a large attendance at the clearing sale of the Eldenslie draught stock stud to-day. and good prices were realised. Mr. E. Short, of Fielding, purchased a four-year-old filly, by Agitator, at 235gus: a four-year-old iy by Shepherd Lad at 140gns; and a three-year-old filly, by Shepherd Lad, at SOgns. A three-year-old filly by Agiwent to D. Duncan, at llOgus; and the same price was given lor a three-year-old filly by the same sire, by Mr T. Muir. Mr. W. H Waddell and Mr. G. Turnbull, Waikaka, also gave high prices for marcs The colts realised up to lOogns. The sale was a very successful one.
