THE BOGUS POLICEMAN CASE
ACCUSED MAN ACQUITTED. (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, John .William Smith, brought up on remand, was charged as a rogue and a vagabond, it being alleged that he had, disguised as a policeman, robbed a Chinaman of £3. The Chinaman at the racecourso l ('cognised Smith as the man who-visited his house as a policeman In search of opium and took money, giving a receipt for the same, and telling the Chinaman to collect it at the police offieo in the morning. The clearest evidonco was given that Smith was not the man who Visited the Chinaman s house. Tlio case was dismissed, the Magistrate expressing regret at the inconvenience caused to an innocent man, but addiiiw that the experience any man would” have in the present circumstances could not be helped. He was pleased, however, that Smith was able to "ivo a perfectly satisfactory account of Siniself, and so leavo the Court without a stain on his character.
