TWO BAD CHARACTERS SENTENCED.

[l’iiu Phebb Association.] AUCKLAND, August 19. George Thomas Hutton and JoJirr, Holmes, two young men, were to-da.v sentenced at the Police Court to a. year’s hard labor. The police stated, that they belonged to a class which robbed and assaulted drunken men. The Magistrate said he was determined to assist the police in the town of such characters. SELLING CIGARETTES TO BOYS. Sevon storekeepers, charged with, selling cigarettes to youths under 15, bad convictions recorded against them,, and were ordered to pay costs. A CHARGE OF STABBING WITHDRAWN. The police withdrew the charge against John Murray, arrested in connection with tho alleged stabbing of Wilarn Bradley during a recent fracas. Bradley contends he was injured by some foreigner. There is a mystery attached to the case which is unlikely to be solved, but from all accounts Murray was quite guiltless. WEATHER AT WANGANUI. WANGANUI, August 19. Heavy rains have been experienced' here for the last five days, about three inches having fallen during that period. The weather is now bright, though very cold. Snow fell on the hills during _the night, and there was a little in town, a very unusual occurrence. The road between Wanganui and Wanganaku is blocked by a slip. The low-iy-ing parts of the country are under water. NAPIER GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL. %

Miss Violet M. Greig, M.A.. at present first assistant in the Waitaki G ris’ High School, has been appointed head mistress of the Napier Girls’ High School, in succession to Miss Spencer, resigned. MORE IMMIGRANTS. WELLINGTON, August 39. The steamer Cornwall due in Wellington on September sth, in bringing 107 immigrants, 51 from England, 49 from Scotland, six from Wales, and one from Ireland. They include farmers, laborers, and miners. Among the women are domestics, dressmakers, and nurses. They are booked as follows: — To Auckland 31, Wellington 28, Dunedin 11, Lyttelton 10. and the balance divided between Westport-, Greymouth, Bluff, and Napier. £IOO FINE FOR SMUGGLING. William Alfred Masters, commercial traveller, who arrived from Sydney by the Moeraki yesterday, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court to-day with having in his possession 100 tins of opium, valued at about £3OO. He was fined £IOO, and an order made for forfeiture of the opium. NEW ZEALAND POTATOES FOR AUSTRALIA. The Federal Government has replied to the Acting-Prime Minister, stating that it will consider the Dominion’s suggestion that the prohibition irnpose<r upon New Zealand potatoes being imported int-o Australia be removed if consignments are accompanied by au official certificate as to freedom from disease, and subject to further inspection upon arrival.

THE POLICE COMMISSION. Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., who is conducting the Police Commission, came to Wellington on Wednesday from Napier, and left to-day for Auckland. He will inspect the police in the northern city on Monday, and will commence to hear evidence on Tuesday. Mr. W. Dinnie, Commissioner of Police, will leave for Auckland on Monday. WESTPORT COAL MINES—REDUCTION OF STAFF. WESTPORT, August 19Owing to the slackness of demand for coal, the Westport Coal Company have knocked off the second shift at the Millerton mine. Two hundred and fifty men have received notice dispensing with their services. AN INSUBORDINATE VOLUNTEER CORPS. DUNEDIN, August 19. The North Dunedin Rifles have unanimously decided to disband, owing to dissatisfaction* with the action of the Defence Council in regard to the appointment of officers, which decision was upheld by the Minister of Defence. AN APPOINTMENT. INVERCARGILL, August 19. At a special meeting of the Borough Council to-night, Mr. John Sturrock,. of Wellington, fifteen mouths Out from Scotland, was appointed town engineer out of 34 applicants.
