HON. J. A. MILLAR
ENTERTAINED AT DUNEDIN.
(Per Press Association A , DUNEDIN, August 19The Hon, J. A. Millar, Minister of Railway’s, was entertained at a social to-night by the combined committee which worked to secure his return for Dunedin West at the last general election. The attendance was large, and an address of a semi-political characterwas given by the Hon. J. A. Millar. The Hon. R. McKenzie was also present, and was received with enthusiasm. Mr. Millar avoided controversial matters, his most important statement being in reference to Sir Joseph Wards-home-coming after the conference “w ith tho British naval and military authorities. He said that no doubt some definite, scheme was the defence of the Linpi re would’ be dcMilfr with during tho coming session. Those who watched European affairs knew that the strug-o-le of tlie future would not be a struggle for territory, but a struggle to retain trade, and unless Britain was prepared to defend her trade she was going to lose. Not knowing Sir Joseph Ward’s proposals, he could not make adefinite statement, but no doubt there would he a long debate m Failiament upon the question of defence.
