HOCKEY.
CITY V. CIVIL SERVICE. The Shield matches were continued on the Domain yesterday afternoon, tlio City meeting the Civil Service team. An excellent game was played, but no scores were registered on either side. Barker, Paaka Turei, and Hargreaves were prominent for the Civil Service team, while Grinlinton, Bull, and Doyle played well for City. Mr. Bushnell refereed. GISBORNE LADIES V. HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS.
A match was played between the High School girls and the Gisborne Ladies’ Hockey Club. The match was keenly contested, and resulted in a draw', neither side being able to notch a score. Mr. O. R. Olsen refereed. LADIES’ CHAMPION TOURNA- . MENT. [Pick Prticsa Association.] . NAPIER, August 19. The New Zealand ladies’ annuiil championship hockey tournament will commence at Cornwall Park, Hastings, to-morrow afternoon. Ten teams are taking part. The Nelson, Auckland, and two Wairarapa teams arrived on Wednesday, and the Wellington, Wanganui, Taranaki, and Horowhenua teams this evening. Hawke’s Bay has nominated two teams. The tournament will extend over nine days, and some of the games will be played in Napier. CANTERBURY DEFEATS AUCKLAND. CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. The representative hockey match between Auckland and Canterbury was played at Lancaster Park this afternoon, before about 1500 people. Canterbury won the toss, and defended the southern gaol. From the bully off the Canterbury forwards broke away, but Sheriff returned. The Rods (Canterbury) kept up the attack, ana after some give-and-take play, Campbell shot well up the field. Snell hit into- the circle, and Green, following up fast, scored. Canterbury 1, Auckland 0. Auckland, from the bully, had tlib Canterbury backs busy, and after some good play Mather found the net. On starting again, Auckland kept up tlio attack, but after good play by Campbell, Halbert passed to Green, who again scored- Canterbury 2, Auckland 1. When half-time was called there was no alteration in the score. Both s : des played up well in the second spell, but Canterbury got another goal scored v Harrington, and the match resulted Canterbury 3. Auckland 1.
