POVERTY BAY HUNT CLUB RACES President, Mr E. Murphy; VicePresidents, ’ Messrs T. Holden and lv. Sherratt; Stewards, Messrs R. Hine, J. M. Gouldsmith, G. M. Reynolds, M. Jackson, and D. Newman. The Poverty Bay Hunt Club’s annual races, held on the Park racecourse yesterday, were most successful from every point- of view. The weather was glorious, the racing good, the fields large, and the races well contested, while there was a pleasant absence of accidents. The horse Blue Bell fell in the Hunters’' Handicap Steeplechase, but, although the rider, Pennell,, was thrown, and the horse seemed to roll upon him, lie was not hurt. An unpleasant occurrence took place during the running, of the First Hack Handicap. Pearl Reef was favorite for the event, and Martyr King was also fancied. Martyr King, as usual, was the first to lead, but it was not long before Pearl Reef was prominent. Suddenly Pearl Reef was seen to drop hack, and Mr. C. J. Parker’a horse came to the front and won. When Pearl Reef came into the enclosure it was seen that J. Jones, the rider, was in a bad way. Elis head was covered with blood, and his forehead 1 badly cut. Jones accused G. Murphy, the rider of Martyr King, of striking him three times across the head with lus whip. An inquiry was held by the stewards, and Murphy was disqualified for two years. Murray accused Jones of using bad language to him, and the latter was fined £l. A feature of the racing was that Mr G. J. Parker won both Hack Handicaps with Erin and Ardfert, and Mr S. Newmans Llangollen won both the Hunters’ Flat raoe and the Hunters’ Bracelet in. hollow fashion. Mr J. M. Gouldsmith acted as starter, and a feature of his work was the fair manner in which he sent his fields away, although there was perhaps a little unnecessary delay. Mr M. Kingston acted as judge, and the non. secretary, Mr W. G. Sherratt, carried out his duties in a most courteous manner... The Hon. James Carroll, acting— Prime. Minister, was present during the afternoon. Previous to the Hunt Cup race, a half-dozen two-year-olds dashed over two furlongs, and they were a promising looking lot. Mrs Erskmo dispensed afternon tea, and seven bookmakers were licensed. The latter had a profitable day, as the favorites were successful in only two out of the six events.
